Are you one of the many who's terrified of having surgery?
Hundreds are just too scared yet hate being fat... what scares you? And how do you feel about diets - can they ever be as effective and long-lasting? ...

NHS workers are not fat because they are lazy and stupid

No wonder NHS workers are more likely to suffer from obesity, stress and other health problems - they work long hours, unreasonable shifts, and it's almost impossible to find antyhing healthy to eat in your average hospital.
That's what many members of my website, Fat Happens.com, say - and many of them are nurses, desperately trying to shed stones in weight whilst also juggling a strenuous job and keep a family.
They say at the end of a long shift, they're too tired to even contemplate going to the gym, or cooking a meal from scratch. And in many hospitals, there's a Burger King or a MacDonalds INSIDE the hospital lobby - so they end up taking Happy Meals home with them, and eat a couple of them on the bus.
They're not fat because they are lazy and stupid - they are merely showing the outward signs of a lifestyle that's too stressed, and feel demoralised because NHS management doesn't value them. Instead of providing realistic work schedules, support, creches, gyms and healthy food outlets, they stick a fast food outlet near the exit!
Didn't we all in the media talk about the dangers of increasing stress levels - back in the 80s? WE warned that stress would become the biggest killer of the 20th century. Now ironically, the stress of being undervalued, badly managed and overworked is showing itself - in our NHS workforce - those who should be the healthiest ambassadors for their profession!
When I wrote my book "War on FAT" a year ago, I showed how Finland managed to turn its nation around, from the unhealthiest (with highest rates of heart disease and strokes) to the healthiest in Europe - within 20 years. They became a nation of bikers, hikers and cyclists! We could do it too - but only with joined up thinking from government and employers downwards. And where better to start than the biggest employer of all - the NHS?
Today's review concludes that there must be a complete culture change within the NHS. It's not just the NHS that needs to change so fundamentally - it's the whole country.
