Do we really know what’s living on our five a day?

We’ve all been told about the health benefits of eating our five fruit and vegetables a day, but do we really know what’s living on our produce each time we bite into a ripe granny smith?30-11-2009

Fit Wash is a 100% natural fruit and vegetable wash that removes most pesticides, bacteria, dirt and contaminants and makes eating natural produce that much safer than washing with water, or heaven forbid, not at all. Here are five reasons to think twice before tucking into fruit and veg, and how to make it the healthy experience it should be.

1  1. Pesticides – Produce is sprayed with all manner of nasty chemicals, but if water were enough to remove these, they’d come off in the rain! Eating our five a day could bring us close to going over our recommended pesticide limits, and this could cause serious damage to our bodies in the long run.*

2.    2. Organic – not as nice as you think - One way to avoid the dangers of pesticides is to buy organic. But organic produce is only washed in water, which simply doesn’t trouble the heavy bacterial load left by natural fertilisers.

3.    3. Food poisoning - Did you know that the lovely salad bag you just popped into your basket might not be as lovely and fresh as it looks? Recent research by Imperial College London highlighted that pre-bagged salad and vegetables are one of the rising sources of food poisoning in the UK today.

4.    4. Wax – This is used to coat our produce such as apples, lemons, pears and cucumbers to prolong storage life and protect it in transit. Sounds OK, right? No, because some of these waxes can contain fungicide and if the produce isn’t cleaned properly then any dirt will be firmly stuck in place when the layer of wax is applied, and water will just bounce off.

5.    5. People-handling residues – It’s not just the pesticides, dirt and germs we have to worry about resting our store bought produce, but the lovely added extra of those people handling residues from workers and picky shoppers.

Still just want to give your produce a quick rinse under the tap?

FIT is made from all natural and every day food ingredients such as grapefruit oil and citric juices; rinsing away clean from your fruit and vegetables, leaving no horrible aftertaste or smell, just the taste and nutrition that nature intended.
