Ward off Winter Bugs with Dorot

With winter fast approaching, immune systems are working overdrive to fight off flu bugs and infectious germs that are so rife at this time of year.29-10-2009

But germs don’t have to dominate the winter months. By changing a few simple dietary habits, suffering at the hands of swine flu and clogged sinuses could be a thing of the past. Garlic, ginger and chilli have long been recognised for their healing powers so by keeping these herbs and spices from Dorot in your freezer; a permanent health boost will be at hand.

Garlic – antibacterial and antiparasitic properties
Garlic has antibacterial properties helping prevent infections and the onset of common colds and flu. Garlic also acts as a stimulant, providing a natural energy release when you need it most. If that’s not enough, garlic contains anti-parasitical properties, also helping to ward off the first signs of infection. And, while most bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics, garlic doesn’t - it’s fool proof.
Recipes:
Get your garlic fix by drinking Garlic Tea, it couldn’t be simpler. Just steep a cube of Dorot Crushed Garlic in hot water, then add lemon juice and honey for flavour. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow allicin to form (allicin is the powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral compound in garlic), then relax and let it take effect.

Ginger – stimulant and thermostatic properties
Ginger is thermostatic which means it balances excessive heat or cold in the body, the perfect remedy for flu sufferers who often suffer shakes and shivers. Like garlic, it is a stimulant so provides a much-needed energy boost. Ginger is also a good stomach settler, making it a popular hangover cure. It alleviates the after effects of alcohol by assisting liver efficiency and helping fend off nausea and diarrhoea – a herb with multiple purposes.
Recipes
Ginger Tea is the perfect antidote to the onset of a cold and sore throat. Mix one cube of Dorot Crushed Ginger with hot water and add a slice of lemon. An optional spoonful of honey can be added as a natural sweetening aid.

Chilli – relieves congestion, fights migraine and sinus headaches

You don’t have to be an expert to know that regularly eating chilli helps clear the nasal passage, a particularly useful side effect when feeling congested. Heat from the chilli helps to stimulate secretions that aid in clearing mucus, combating nasal congestion. It is also a natural pain reliever and helps to alleviate migraines and sinus headaches. Like garlic, chilli also contains antibacterial properties helping to fight chronic sinus infections, providing both health and taste benefits.

Did you know?
• A typical chilli packs more vitamin C than an orange
• Chilli contains a thermogenic compound, increasing the metabolic rate, which aids the fat burning process. Studies reveal that eating chillies can raise your metabolic rate by up to 23% for about 3 hours
• Chilli can keep your feet warm during cold winter nights – some people swear by sprinkling powdered chilli in their shoes!
• The medicinal benefits of garlic are most effective when it is crushed or chopped
• Not getting enough sleep can reduce the effectiveness of your immune system by up to 50 per cent, prioritise your zzzz’s!
