Eco-Atkins diet suggests reducing heart attacks and stroke
A small, month-long study at St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto in Ontario, of the so-called Eco-Atkins diet, which stresses plant proteins, worked better than a high-carb diet at reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein or LDL, which raises the risks of heart attacks and stroke and showed signs of lowering blood pressure.03-07-2009
Nigel Denby’s comment: I was one of the loudest voices criticising the original Atkin’s diet with it’s endless meat, fat and complete lack of fruit, vegetables and fibre. This new approach to a high protein diet is very interesting though and appears to reduce a lot of the concern about high protein diets and their high saturated fat content- bigger and longer studies would be the next step needed for us to get a clearer picture.
