While our bodies do manufacture vitamin D on exposure to sunshine, the levels in some northern countries are so weak during the winter months that our body makes no vitamin D at all, meaning that dietary supplements and fortified foods are seen by many as the best way to boost intakes of vitamin D. The Researchers said that previous studies had reported an association between vitamin D deficiency and obesity, but “it is not clear if inadequate vitamin D causes obesity or the other way around”, she said.
Nigel Denby’s comment: While studies like this are interesting we can’t take them a public health messages and immediately start incorporating them into our day to day lives. Vitamin D is attracting a lot of interest from the scientific community at the moment and there will be countless stories about what the vitamin can and can’t do. Until we have enough information to give solid advice about vitamin D, the thing to remember is that you make it in your skin from being outside- so get out into the open and get active- that will definitely give your health a boost- of course it’s a very sunny- slap on some sunscreen too.
