This is my story
I am 69, partnered, a son, a daughter and two grandchildren. Retired four years, living in a small terrace in East London. Basically happy, but troubled with severe arthritis, particularly in both knees, always discomfort and some pain. This interferes with my ability to participate in a lot of things - going out with my grandchildren, going to the pub with my partner, other activities.
I am badly in need of knee replacement surgery, but the weight is in the way.I used to be size 14, and attended yoga, circuit training, and sometimes jogged in the mornings before work. That was when I was married and lived in the country.
I left my marriage 22years ago and came to London, where my lifestyle changed dramatically - sitting in pubs making new friends. I have managed to make a new and happy life for myself, but have struggled with the weight. I think I have failed every single weight management course or book or plan. Twice I lost 4 stone or more - once with Slimming world in 1999 - a year later I had put it all back on; and once with Lighterlife in 2004. This seems to have had the most serious consequences, as I put the weight on very rapidly, and now I just can't seem to lose weight with any diet. It does not help that I cannot do much physical exercise. I also have the Paul McKenna cds which I think are really good, and they work for a while also, but I cannot stick to anything.
I have tried to register for bariometric surgery, but apparently this is not done over the age of 55. I was prescribed slimming pills for 3 months , but have had to be taken off the tablets as my blood pressure rose. Because of the arthritis it is difficult for me to step up and down, so can no longer use public transport, so this limits my ability to get around. I am very lucky with a supportive family and partner, but I despair of my inability to help myself.
It would be very helpful to hear from others in the same Catch 22 situation!
