This is my story
Hello! I am hoping to be able to provide a bit of a lifeline/support to those people who are struggling to lose weight. By profession I am a hypnotherapist and probably 30 - 40 % of the people I see come to see me because they want to lose weight. I am usually their last resort (not that I mind!)! Most people I see have tried every diet under the sun. Lots of them have been really successful at losing large amounts of weight in the past, but the weight has gradually (and sometimes quickly!) crept back on. The reason I write today, is that I was angered by all the dreadful publicity about Anne and the gastric band she had fitted. I was particularly enraged about the comment that was made that as Anne had children, that should be motivation enough to lose weight!! Well if it were that simple, wouldn't everyone who has children, have already lost the excess weight they want to lose? If children were the best motivation to have, wouldn't all the parents who smoke, be non smokers - of course not! It's not about logic! It's not about knowing what you should do! It's far, far more complex than that! The unconscious mind is a powerful tool, sometimes it works to your advantage and sometimes not! It does not deliberately come up with habits that it thinks are harmful, but in it's own naive way, it does sometimes come up with it's own way of either protecting us, making us feel a sense of happiness (even if it is short lived), escapism and many others. All habits are learned. They are learned through life and we are a result of the life that we have lived. Those who have influenced us throughout our lives - parents, siblings, friends, teachers, work colleagues, bosses, enemies, bullies, TV, magazines etc, etc all play a part in what we become. Like anything in life, the more we practice it (good or bad) the better we become at it. Most people who carry excess weight have spent a lifetime at 'practicing' their unhelpful habits and become very good at it! The unhelpful habits around eating include constant self criticism about lack of control, questionning about 'why' healthy choices don't seem to be possible - these habits are just as unhelpful as eating the wrong foods. They constantly re-inforce the bad feelings you have about yourself and invariably push you back into - guess what - eating the wrong things!! There is salvation though! How about life without 'diets'? How about making the choice, yes making the choice to eat less or eat differently because you choose to? How about saying no to that food that you know you don't need, but maybe in the past you would have had it anyway? How about allowing yourself to feel good about the food you don't eat, instead of bad about the food you do? I get a great deal of pleasure from having helped lots and lots of people, men, women and children adopt a 'normal' eating pattern. Yes a NORMAL eating pattern! Not a strict diet, not saying no to everythinig that falls into the 'naughty' category - just normal! Maybe there is a way that I could share some of this information with those people that are struggling to lose weight. I'm not sure about the best way to do this, but I'd be happy to answer questions, give tips and ideas or maybe come up with some other way - perhaps some sort of weekly progress plan - similar to that I use with my clients to help set goals and monitor progress and deal with tricky issues. Maybe if anyone thinks this will help - let me know? Andrea HALO Hypnotherapy Ltd.
