This is my story
hi,my name is michelle.I am32yrs old and I am a mum to four beautiful children.I am married,when i fell pregnant with my fourth child ,three months into my pregnancy i became very poorly.I was suffering with excruciating headaches,which would not go away,eventually the pain got so bad that if I sat up or laid down I thought my head was going to explode.I used to wrap pillows around my head to cushion my pain.When I went to my GP he prescibed me paracetamols!!! In my desperation I went to get my eyes tested,I was told that I had swelling on the backs of my eyes and that I would need a brain scan.The care that i recieved at my local hospital was fantastic within two weeks I had had many optical tests,seen a fantastic neurologist,had my brain scan and had a lumber puncture to relieve the pressure that was building up in my head.Six weeks later I had to have another lumber puncture which revealed that I had twice the cranial pressure and was diagnosed as having BIH.It is a rare condition that affects 1 in 100,000 people, basically the back of the optic discs swell and the fluid from the brain cannot pass.The medical team were fantastic they kept a very close eye on my baby checking every few weeks that all was okay.It was hoped that the condition would burn out once my baby was delivered,but here I am 5yrs on still going for regular check ups.I have always struggled with my weight,when the going gets tough out come the biscuits! Last year my GP suggested that I consider weight loss surgery I was horrified,but she felt that I would greatly benefit from it.In December 07 I was very brave and went for an appointment to see a bariatric surgeon,(I took my dad with me as I felt very nervous about the whole thing!!!)I came out from the appointment feeling very positive,everything had been explained so clearly to me that i felt very excited and that it would be a fresh start for me.On the 22nd of may 08 I had a gastric band fitted,four months in and I feel great.Ive lost three stones already,the only problem is that I have to keep going shopping?Its great fun though.My work collegues keep telling me that my smile is getting bigger and my inner happiness is radiating out of me.I truelly feel a much happier person now some of my confidence is starting to come back.
