This is my story
From the time I was 20 (after the birth of my first child) weight has been a major problem. Only on three occasions since have I managed to get in good shape, the most recent being six years ago. What happened to change that? Well, my husband retired so I could not reasonably spend two to three hours a day in the gym which was how I got the weight off. I've tried exercising at home but it's not the same.

I'm retired too but I keep busy all the time because I have lots of hobbies - unfortunately most of these involve sitting down. I'm not fat because I am a "foody". I'm really not very interested in food at all, but one has to eat. My husband, however, is a foody. He is the cook in our household - even if I decline dinner, he will still cook a full meal - even a roast - just for himself. Trouble is, he is such a good cook but he doesn't understand the word "small" when appied to portions, and I am too weak willed to leave delicious food on my plate. What am I saying? I'm not weak willed at all, otherwise I would not have been able to go from 40 cigarettes a day to nil at a stroke. That was fifteen years ago now but I can honestly say that giving up smoking had no effect whatsoever on my eating habits, nor did it affect my weight. In those days I used to drink a fair bit too. Not excessively though and over the years I have lost the taste for it.

I am very happily married - second time for both of us - but I have spent most of my life wishing I was different to how I am. And it's such a waste of precious time. Now my GP wants me to lose weight. She's not judgemental about it but she's not helpful either. I'd love to lose some weight, not as much as perhaps I should, but enough to make me more comfortable with myself as well as in my clothes.

Question is, how?

PS The hobbies and interests list needs updating - I embroider, do patchwork, make cards and scrap books. I love photography and fiddling with computers.
